[Bronze Age Text]
(CLICK to Enlarge) Celtic coins of the second century
before Christ, issued in Spain (lower
example) and in Aquitania (upper example). Both are imitations of the silver coinage of
the Iberian Greek city of Emporion, and both carry the word nomse (coinage). The upper example was written in ogam
consaine, the lower in Iberian letters.
Examples such as these disprove the belief that ogam was a British
invention dating from the end of the Roman era (Fell 1982). |
